Hi. Many of you may have read my Open Letter to All Fandoms recently. I got a lot off my chest in that post, but I wanted to talk very specifically about Harry Potter for a bit.

Let me begin by establishing my Harry Potter nerd cred. I…

SHIIIIIT, did messy just try to say it was homophobic to want a gay person in a book? I don’t think you know what homophobia is.

No, he (he, right?) said that it’s damn near homophobic to think that two guys can’t be really good friends without secretly boning each other. He almost literally said exactly that. And i don’t know if i personally would call that homophobic or nearly so, but it’s definitely ignorant and naive.

Are you talking about me?

Because no. 1, I’m a woman. 2, that isn’t what I said in any way shape or form. Did you read my post?

I never said in any way that two men can’t be friends without being gay. I don’t even know where that would come from. All I did was talk about how I wanted to see my sexuality represented in fiction, and listed off a few characters who I related to and thought might be a potential source for that representation.

I don’t know how poor your reading comprehension has to be to take “I wish there was some LGBTQ+ representation in this book. Here’s a few characters that I felt could have had a queer reading to them potentially” and turn that into “OMG MALE FRIENDSHIP IS ALWAYS BUTTSEX”, but it is impressive.

You know what I really hate about the criticism that we can’t ship two men because friendship does not equal romantic love? Because I cannot imagine that criticism being used seriously when it is a man and a woman. There are tons of shows with a goofy guy or girl friend who is good friends with the main character. And they get shipped. Nobody is going around shutting them down because ‘women and men can be friends without it being more’.

I’d think in a media where male friendships are overrepresented, where girls and guys cannot be friends without it becoming romantic, and where gay people are never given a voice, that worrying about whether viewers will remember that ‘men can be friends without it being romantic’ is the least of our problems.

Exactly.

I mean, if you want an example of how hetero-normative our culture is, just look at that argument. “What? The suggestion that two men who are friends COULD be gay? DONT BE CRAZY! Men who are friends CANT be gay, they are FRIENDS!” Because queerness is systematically erased in our culture.

I’m not arguing “two men who are friends can’t be gay”, I’m arguing against “two men who are friends must be gay”.  Especially if you fancy them.

And yes, the same applies to men/women and women/women.

You do realise the connection right?  The bigoted view is that gay men cannot be friends with straight men, straight men and women can never be just friends, etc.  The implication is that bisexuals can only ever have sexual relationships.  So taking any two cocks that aren’t tied down and slamming them together isn’t exactly respectful.

Now, there is, of course, nothing really wrong with having fantasies.  But you weren’t just doing that.  You had to make it into an “Issue”.  You had to make it so that the whole world was against you.

So if you’re going to take your wankfantasy and project it out into the world like it’s a great social justice issue, you’ll have to excuse me for not going along with your fetishisation of my sexuality.

By the way, you do realise I’m gay, right?  And that your little rant earlier about my heterosexual privilege was complete nonsense?

And let us not forget the true meaning of Christmas…

…insulting the gays.

For did not Mary say unto the baby Jesus:

“No homo”?

Derps,
The CoE and CoW aren’t the only people who conduct marriages.
The Government will legalise CIVIL gay marriage. It’s just that these two religious groups complained so much that our Government conceded and slapped them when they started saying “Oh but there was support”.

How bizarre.
Gandalf is right*.  Although, there will be religious same-sex marriage, it’s just that religions will have to “opt-in”.
The CoE don’t even want to perform same-sex marriages.  The “ban” (why ban want won’t happen) is only there to placate conservative opposition.  Freedom of religion is an important concept too.  If the CoE changes it’s mind, then the law could be changed.  Hell, it could be changed without affecting reality at all, but the Tory backbenchers want their guarantee.
It’s one of the weird things that happen when you have a (semi-) state religion.
In any case, any other religious body that wants to perform a same-sex marriage will be able to do so under the governments plans.  The ones that don’t won’t have to.
It’s not an ideal situation, but I think it’s one of those awkward compromises that makes democracy work.
To sum up, same-sex couples in England and Wales will be able to marry and, if their religion accepts them, they will be able to be married by that religion.  Overall, a happy situation for all concerned.
Here’s a BBC article on the subject.*I never thought I’d use that sentence in real life.

Hey, you, straight people who support same-sex marriage!

Thanks, it means a lot :-)

You just know that you are in for a wonderful piece of journalism when the first two paragraphs contain the witty little bon mot:

London is so tolerant it could be twinned with Sodom – or alternatively with our neighbourhood French villages called Orgy and Anus (I’m not joking, they are both next door to us).

So begins this article for the Daily Mail by Alexander Boot.
